Environmental and Urban Economics

Kawabata Mizuki Seminar(P)(DD)

Introduction

Advances in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial data have
enabled more detailed and sophisticated analyses of spatial issues in
cities and regions.

At the Kawabata Seminar, we approach real-world urban and regional
socioeconomic challenges from a spatial perspective. By utilizing GIS
and spatial datasets, we develop the ability to visualize and analyze
the structure and dynamics of urban and regional systems.

Through practical spatial data analysis using GIS and geospatial
information, we aim to generate new insights that contribute to
solving real-world problems. Embracing Keio University’s philosophy of
“Hangaku Hankyo” (students and teachers learning together), we foster
a stimulating and collaborative environment where we enjoy learning
and conducting research together.

GIS has opened up fascinating new ways to explore and understand the
spatial dimensions of urban and regional socioeconomic structures.
With the rapid expansion of spatial data, its applications are now
spreading across diverse fields, including economics.
In our seminar, cherishing Keio University’s founding philosophy of
Hangaku-Hankyo—the spirit of learning and teaching together—we explore
GIS collaboratively. Through this shared learning process, we exchange
ideas, gain fresh perspectives, and uncover insights that would be
difficult to discover on our own.
